May 20, 1927 - November 24, 2011
Wilma LaVerne Fleshman Bowers, of Mullens died November 24, 2011 from complications following a stroke. Born May 20, 1927 at Bluefield, VA, she was the eighth of nine children of the late James and Myrtle Wallace Fleshman. Wilma was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She adored her family and friends. She was a multi-talented lady who sang in the church choir and at special events. Heaven has gained a new singer. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens, Eastern Star, Mullens Community Theatre, and Beta Sigma Phi with a 50-year pin. Wilma worked for Wyoming General Hospital for over 20 years. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three sisters, Maude Smith, Vera Blackwell, and Dale Pearson; and three brothers, Bernard, Ted, and Roy Fleshman. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 57 years, Jim Bowers; a daughter, Catherine Bowers Modley and her husband, Bob, of Beckley; a sister, Edna Fleshman of Mullens; special grandchildren who were the blessings of her life, Adam and Ashton Brown of Morgantown; step-grandchildren, Bobby, Ashley, and Misty; step-great-grandchildren, Kira, Kassidy, and Kaden; a host of nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. Services will be 12 Noon, Monday, November 28, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, Mullens with Rev. Tracy French officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Bluefield, Va. Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearer will be Dink Spade. Special thanks to Dink and Pam Spade for their support and care and to the girls at the Raleigh Center, Daniels. Her grandchildren, Ashton and Adam would like to share one of their grandmother's favorite songs: "And as we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our souls, there walks a lady we all know who shines white light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold and if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last when all are one and one is all, to be a rock and not to roll. And she's buying the Stairway to Heaven." Arrangements have been entrusted to the Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens, W.Va.
