This beloved promise was fulfilled in the life of Wanda E. Halsey Phillips, 91, of Allen Junction, who died at the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley on Sunday, May 10, 2009. Born January 29, 1918, in Pierpoint, Wanda was the daughter of the late Walter Watson and Mary Elizabeth Sarver Halsey. She was the great-granddaughter of Henry Drury Halsey, the first of the family to come to Wyoming County. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, the Rev. Garland T. Phillips in June 1999. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Those preceding her in death were two sisters, Violet Aldine Stewart and Alma Ruth Halsey; two brothers, Romie Jackson Halsey and Robert Vaughn Halsey; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth McKinney. She was a member of the Amigo Missionary Baptist Church at Amigo. She was a very devout Christian woman, being faithful to her Lord. She had a humble spirit and was a servant to all who needed assistance in time of trouble. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her and had received her kindness. Mrs. Phillips is survived by two daughters, Jean McKinney (Bill) of Savannah, Ga. and Kay Mullins (James) of Allen Junction; one son, Pastor Ron Phillips (Margaret) of Brushfork; one sister-in-law, Helen Sizemore Halsey of Glen Burnie, Maryland; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is survived by five grandchildren, Beth Davis (Randy) of Savannah, Ga., Thomas McKinney (Rebecca) of Chula Vista, Calif., Joy and Joshua Mullins of Allen Junction and Jason Mullins and his fiancé, Aleshia Deskins, both of Mullens; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Cowart (Lucas) of Statesboro, Ga., Matthew and Justin Davis of Savannah, Ga., William McKinney (Adriana) of Sante, Calif., Chris McKinney of Vacaville, Calif., Jonathan McKinney of Chula Vista, Calif. and Aerial Deskins of Mullens. A celebration of Mrs. Phillips' life will be 1 P.M. Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis England and the Rev. Gilbert Dodson officiating. Entombment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley. Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
