Virginia B. Shumate

October 5, 1924 - September 29, 2015

Virginia B. Shumate, 90, of Grandview, formerly of Iroquois passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Bowers Hospice House. Born October 5, 1924 at Welch, she was the daughter of the late Avery and Hester (Byrd) Hood. Virginia was a homemaker, a 60 resident of Iroquois, the last years of her life, Virginia resided with her daughter in Grandview. She was also the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband, Garland Shumate; grandson, Roy Thompson; son-in-law, Don Howerton; and seven brothers and sisters. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Vincent Shumate and his wife, Judy of Beckley; her daughter, Fern Howerton of Grandview; three grandchildren, Terry Shumate and his wife, Brenda; Steve Thompson and his wife, Belinda; and Wendy Maltempie and her husband, Philip; three great grandchildren, Adam Maltempie, Elizabeth Maltempie, and Michaela Shumate; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 12 noon, Friday, October 2, 2015 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens with Rev. Gary Eskins officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Philip Maltempie, Adam Maltempie, Terry Shumate, Steve Thompson, and Mark Hylton.
