Sadie Martin

July 22, 1937 - March 8, 2016

Sadie Pearl Martin, 78, of Beckley, our beloved sister and aunt, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 8, 2016 following a long illness. Born July 22, 1937 in Bud, she was the daughter of the late Arnold Lee Hatfield and Margaret Green Hatfield Archie. Sadie was born deaf but was never limited by her disability. She attended and graduated from The West Virginia School for the deaf and the blind in Romney, WV, and also graduated from the Vocational School in Institute with a Seamstress certificate, and that is where she met her late husband, John Wesley Martin. Later in life, Sadie also lost her eyesight but she never lost her joy for life. She brightened the days of all those who were blessed to know her. She kept her days full by reading the Bible in Braille, writing by typing on her Braille typewriter, scrap booking, and spending quality time with those she loved the most. In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Richard and Martha Stanley Green; paternal grandparents, John Wesley Hatfield and Ada Miller Hatfield; stepfather, James L. Archie; two brothers, Melvin Archie and Richard Archie; and her husband, John Wesley Martin. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving sisters, Virginia Hatfield Stoots and Frances Keaton and her husband, Thomas; two brothers, John W. and Jessie G. Archie; her caregiver, Tracy Carrington; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday March 12, 2016 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wayne Peters officiating. Burial will follow in the Hickory Ridge Cemetery, Bud Mtn. Friends may call one hour prior to the services Saturday at the funeral home. Great nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Vera Plumley for the time spent with Sadie during her last days of life, doctors and nurses at Raleigh General Hospital, and Home Health staff at Appalachian Regional Hospital especially, Latina.
