April 6, 1947 - April 15, 2021
Joyce Dean McKinney was born at home in Covel, WV on April 6, 1947 to the late Corbit and Arietta Huffman Lusk. She attended grade school on Lusk Settlement before going to Herndon Jr. High and Herndon High School where she was a cheerleader, a majorette, and played clarinet in the band. She began working after school at C&P Telephone Co in Mullens as a Telephone Operator. Joyce’s next job was a cashier at Island Creek Coal Company and then as a cashier at J&J Supermarket. Then Joyce made the decision to go to LPN school. Her first job was at Family Healthcare in Mullens followed by BARH in Beckley and finally she retired from Beckley VA Hospital after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. One of Joyce’s favorite things was singing for Jesus. First as a Cousinette and then a Prodigal, she was our only Tenor. Joyce loved her family and her Lord. Joyce went to be with Jesus on April 15, 2021 at 4:10 am at Bowers Hospice House with her faithful, loving sister, Brenda Compton by her side, whom she had lived with since her daughter had passed away on September 24, 2020. Those left to remember Joyce’s love and commitment, her son, Robert Clark and his wife, Tiffany and their children, Erin and Lily Clark of Newport News, VA. Joyce’s daughter, who passed from cancer, Melissa Clark Mounts, and her husband, Anthony and their children, Sarah Mounts Voche and her husband, Keith, Timothy and Isaiah Mounts; grandchildren, Trinity Liam, and Willow Voche all of Johnson City, TN; Joyce’s sisters, Brenda Compton and her husband, David Wayne of Mullens and Pat (Porkey) Sizemore and her husband, Stacy of Herndon. We also want to recognize Joyce’s special caregiver, Kara Campbell Corinne and lots of nieces, nephews, and cousins. As per Joyce’s wishes, she will be cremated and a celebration of her life will be 12 Noon, Saturday, May 15, 2021 at the Mullens Pentecostal Holiness Church, Mullens with Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Joyce wanted the celebration to be very causal, like a family reunion, full of love and laughter. In lieu of flowers, her sisters ask that donation of sympathy be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801. The family would like to express their thanks to the nurses at Bowers Hospice House who took wonderful care of Joyce and her sisters. Thank you everyone for your love and kindness, especially the staff at Tankersley Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.tankersleyfh.com. The family of Joyce McKinney is being cared for by Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens.
