John William Calhoun, III, 67, of Mullens, WV, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, following a long illness. He was born on January 2, 1944, in East Gulf, West Virginia, to the late John W. and Virginia McGinnis Calhoun. He spent most of his life in Mullens and currently had homes in Mullens, Smith Mountain Lake, VA, and Sebastian, FL. John was a graduate of Mullens High School. As a young man he was employed in Washington D.C. He returned home, was an employee of Mullens Hardware & Appliance Co. in Mullens, and drove a school bus for the Wyoming Co. Board of Education. He was a retired UMWA coal miner, last working at U.S. Steel # 50, as an electrician and mechanic. John attended the First Presbyterian Church in Mullens. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #151 A.F.& A.M. in Mullens, Royal Arch Masons #50 - Admiral Chapter in Mullens, and Bluefield Commandery #19. As an avid fisherman, John enjoyed fishing at Smith Mountain Lake and in Florida. He loved hunting, especially at the Calhoun homestead in Deerfield, Virginia. He will be remembered for his wit, humor, honesty, hard work, ability to fix things and pride in his Scottish heritage. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Anna Taylor Calhoun. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Teresa Martoe Calhoun, of the home, daughters, Virginia "Jenny Ann" Calhoun-Lusk and her husband, Paul, of Mullens, and Jennifer Stallings of Princeton, WV, son, Joe Stallings and his wife, Angie, of Atlanta, GA, five grandsons John Paul and Andrew Lusk of Mullens, Joe Jr., Robert and John Stallings of Atlanta, GA, sister, Lucy Charles and her husband, Joe, of Ashland, KY, brother-in-law, Mike Martoe and his wife, Laurie, of Vero Beach, FL., special aunt, Jo Scott Calhoun of Staunton, VA, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends in Mullens, Virginia, and Florida. He will be missed by his four-legged babies, Rosie and Tina. A celebration of John's life will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 14, 2011 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens. In keeping with John's wishes cremation will follow.
