June 9, 1950 - May 20, 2013
"Come unto me ye that Labour and are heavy laden - and I will give you rest." Janice Louise Cox Martin, 62, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013 after a lengthy, painful bout with lung cancer. She was born on June 9, 1950, at the home of her parents, Thomas Howard and Betty Jean Peck Cox, in the coal mining community of Micco, located in Logan County, WV. Janice attended Mullens High School. On July 25, l967, she and Danny Martin quietly eloped and got married in Pearisburg, VA. Danny was in the Army and they moved to Killeen, Texas. After being married two years, their first child, Danny Lee Martin, Jr., was born. Two years later, their daughter, Christina Lynette, was born. Janice was fortunate in that she was able to stay home and lovingly care for and nurture her children until they started school. Over time, Danny was transferred with the N&W Railroad to Kansas City, MO where they lived for two years - but Janice was so homesick. Mullens was always "home" for her. Danny was transferred back to WV and they lived in Mullens until after both children graduated from Mullens High School. Danny also worked in Virginia and later in Knoxville,TN where he retired from the N & S Railroad in 2000. Janice was a hard working individual with quite a sense of humor. She always took pride wherever she worked no matter what the job. Within the family, she was regarded as the "Queen of Clean" as she and Danny made a good pair in maintaining such a lovely home. She worked at the local library in Mullens and several restaurants in Mullens and Tennessee. She enjoyed the time she worked and the friendships she cultivated. She made lifelong friends and kept in contact with them no matter where she lived. Janice was very proud of her children and their accomplishments. Christy became a Registered Nurse and Danny Lee an engineer on the N&S Railroad. She was preceded in death by her Mom and Dad; maternal grandparents, Fannie and Ballard Peck; paternal grandparents, James B. and Gertrude Cox; and many aunts and uncles. Janice is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Danny Martin; loving and caring daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Keith Jones of Sevierville, TN; loving son, Danny Lee Martin of Knoxville, TN; two granddaughters, Nikki and Jessica Martin; two grandsons, Joshua and Conner Jones; two brothers, James David Cox and his wife, Beverly, of Mullens, WV and Thomas H. Cox, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Tunnel Hill, GA; and one sister, Lana Cox Shrader and her husband, Gail, of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by a favorite cousin and wife whom she loved as a brother and sister, Marchell and Nancy Peck, of Lilburn, GA. She is also survived by her loving Mother and Father-in-law, Frances and Ernest Martin, of Mullens, WV.; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Kenny Thorn, of New Richmond, WV.; and brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Donna Martin,of Mullens, WV. Other survivors are nieces and nephew, Victoria VanOver, Ryan Cox and Mandy Douglas and husband, David. Janice is also survived by former daughter-in-law, Rhonda Martin; and life-long friends: Barbara Blankenship, Sharon Pack, Shirley Pack, and Joann Wilcox. She will also be missed by two special Tennessee friends, Evelyn Cowan and Carolyn Patterson. She also leaves behind a host of other cousins and friends. We have lost a very caring, generous person who meant a great deal to all of us. We shall truly miss her laughter and sense of humor. She dearly loved her family and she always enjoyed our Annual Family Reunions, particularly those at Twin Falls Resort Park in WV. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain - and she has joined her Mom, Dad and all those wonderful family members gone on before. Janice wanted to say a special "Thank You" to her husband, Dan, for doing all the things that she could no longer do. He kept the household going! To Christy, no one could have had a more attentive, loving daughter. She was always there for all those crucial appointments and caring for Janice not only as a daughter but a nurse as well. She always enjoyed visits with Danny Lee, and all four grandchildren. Janice just loved her family and we shall miss her! A special "Thank You" also to Vicki Kay and the employees at Girling Health Care, Sevierville, TN, for all the personal kindnesses extended to Janice. Special care was received from doctors and staff at Thompson Cancer Center and, Dr. Greggory Lemense, and Ft. Sanders Regional Hospital. Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.L. Riffe officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. Friends may call one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home. At last, she is at rest and free from pain. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
