June 22, 1931 - January 21, 2016
Gladys Pauline Reed Parnell, 84, formerly of Barker's Ridge, quietly departed this life to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, January 21, 2016. After the death of her husband of sixty (60) years, she moved to the Charleston area to be with her daughter and son-in-law, Donald and Linda Wiseman, but most of her life was spent in Wyoming County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley and Ealva Brown Reed; two sisters, Dallie Persinger and Ginger Cook; brother, Jim (all of Ft Myers, Fl); husband, Lawrence; son-in-law, Joe Fatony (Pineville); and granddaughter, Jesseca Anderson Martin (Deland, FL). Gladys was known by several names. Her father called her "Squeak"; her husband and mother called her Glad; and her son-in-law called her Millie. All of the grandchildren called her Nanny but even as adults, her children still called her Mommy. Much of her life was concentrated on home life and family but she was always involved in a "project". In 1955 she bought a Singer treadle sewing machine and taught herself to sew. She will be well-remembered for her seamstress skills, arts and crafts and beautiful flower gardens. In earlier years she won many awards for top Avon representation and for the past two years she avidly participated in crocheting sleeping mats for the homeless, a project sponsored by Union Mission Ministries. Gladys loved people and made herself available to anyone who needed her. Her personality was that of strength, determination, humility, compassion and kindness. She loved books, flowers, and animals, especially her little dog, Joey but more than anything else, she loved her Lord and Saviour...reading about Him, talking about Him, and talking to Him. A committed Christian for more than fifty (50) years, she strived to be a good example to everyone she met. Gladys made an impact on everyone who knew her because she was a joy to be with. She was adventurous, witty and quick to laugh. She was a true "fun-loving" girl and will be missed very much. Survivors include Donald and Linda Parnell-Wiseman (Charleston); Lawrence, Jr and Kathy Acord Parnell, (Rural Retreat, VA); Susan Parnell Fatony, (Rural Retreat, VA); Kenneth and Joyce Dominick Parnell, Barker's Ridge, WV);eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and Joey. We will see you soon, Mom. (I Thess. 4:15-17) Friends may call from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens.
