Eugene Ray Evans, 90, of Mullens, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008 at Raleigh General Hospital. Born December 22, 1918 at Bradshaw, he was the son of the late F. N. and Gretta Waggoner Evans. Mr. Evans was a 1937 graduate of Princeton High School and earned additional college credits. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He worked for American Coal at Deerfield as foreman and Consolidated Coal Company at Itmann as a tower operator, retiring in 1982. Mr. Evans was a member of the Mullens United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club, the Moose Lodge, and UMWA and Local #9690. He truly loved his family. He enjoyed numerous outdoor activities, square dancing, and working on his home. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Dana Lee Stike Evans; a sister-in-law, Wanda Shrewsberry Evans; and a brother-in-law, Max Berliner. He is survived by a son, Dr. Eugene R. Evans, II, of Beckley; a daughter, Susan Evans, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; a brother, Douglas Evans of Bluefield, Va.; a sister, Natalie Berliner of Santa Fe, NM; and several nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed. The family would like to thank the staff of the Beckley V. A. Hospital and the Raleigh General Hospital for the care and comfort given during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity or church of your choice. Committal services and entombment will be 2:00PM Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at the Resthaven Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Princeton with Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating. Friends may call from 5:30 to 8:00PM Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009 at the Tankersley Funeral Home, 102 Moran Avenue, Mullens.
